Waikeria uprising: Eyewitness reports new fire at prison as protests continue

A fresh fire broke out at Waikeria Prison last night, according to an eye-witness, after days of unrest at the facility.
A group of 16 inmates are still evading capture on the jail s roof after starting a riot and lighting damaging fires in the prison yard on Tuesday afternoon.
Adrien Disher, who lives nearby Waikeria Prison, said he spotted another fire at Waikeria last night.
Adrian Disher, who lives about 3km from the prison, said a new fire began last night and he saw emergency services heading to the site about 7pm.

Two climbers one badly injured spent a night in Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park as rescuers embarked on a complicated mission to get them to safety.
The climbers were caught by a rock slide in steep terrain on Wednesday evening and weather conditions hampered rescue efforts, but a break in the clouds early on Thursday morning allowed a helicopter crew to winch down an alpine cliff rescue team.

A group of Panama residents have attacked the Panama Wildlife Office last night and caused damage.
This was after a person was killed by a leopard at night near the Kudumbigala reserve in Panama on the 30th.
Five persons have been arrested in connection with the damage to the wildlife office and are due to be produced before the Pottuvil Magistrate s Court today.

Police in Whangamatā have today charged a 54-year-old local man with inciting disorderly behaviour after the riot last night that damaged a local cafe.
A police spokeswoman said the arrest related to live-streaming the riot involving the Blackies Cafe on social media.
It allegedly captured the man inciting disorder in what was already a challenging policing environment.
The man will appear later in Waihi District Court in respect of this charge.
Advertisement Police ask that people consider the impact that incitement of disorder on social media can have on public order and the safety of our communities, the spokeswoman said.

The Thames Coromandel mayor has come out swinging at a group of unruly teens who ran rampant in Whangamatā last night, rioting and causing carnage in the streets.
Twenty two people were arrested across Whangamatā as a result of the incident and other hotspots of disorder in the Coromandel town.
